The # 1 Selling Drivers in Golf Shouldn’t be a Driver but a Thriver

What Size Driver Do I Need? The New Acer XS Titanium Thriver Is A Fairway Seeking Demon

Acer XS Titanium Thriver DriverWe all know the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. But somehow when we walk onto a golf course all logic instantly disappears.  Your first hole may be a par 4 or 5 and you pull the big stick out of the bag expecting it to sail down the middle of the fairway. Without much warming up, you swing for the fences with all of the might you can muster and watch the ball fly through the air for what seems like an eternity and suddenly – BINGO – you hit the fairway.  Only this time it wasn’t your own! If this sounds like you or your playing partners or even one of your customers then you will want to listen up.

Are you itching to hit the ball longer?
I am going to be brutally honest here and make this statement “Every golf manufacturer attempts to sell you hope.”  Think about it, you (or your customer) go to purchase a new driver.  What are they looking for?  That’s right, those extra 5, 10 or 15 yards off of the tee or basically something to brag about to your buddies when you get to the 19th hole. By that time you finished the round selective amnesia has already set in.  That one tape measured drive you had on hole #16 gets your juices flowing to come back and play again.  But what was sadly forgotten were the other 13 drives that didn’t go so well.

Here is a fact – nearly half of all golfers will fail to break 100 for 18 holes.  For those of average to above average strength, they will likely miss every single fairway (if they count only their own).  Drives that fly 200 yards out and take a hard turn left or right by 40 yards does not count as a 240 driver either.  Not only did that player lose potential distance, the ball might land in a hazard or on the next shot, you may have to try to hit around another obstacle.  That is, of course, if the ball wasn’t OB or sitting in a large patch of poison ivy.  I know, I am not painting a pretty picture, but this happens all of the time at golf courses everywhere.

Acer XS Thriver Driver

With the advances in clubhead design, why do so many golfers still miss fairways on a regular basis?
Here is another fact.  Drivers today are all increasingly longer in length and lighter weight than even a few years ago.  Why?  So one can potentially swing the club faster and have more leverage to hit the ball further.  It is true, advances in clubhead design have allowed the modern driver to be more forgiving on off-center shots, but it still comes down to the player making a good swing so the club face is pointed reasonably square toward the target upon impact.  Fellas, making the club lighter and longer will only going to make it harder to accomplish that feat for the average golfer, let alone the higher handicapper.

If the solution sounds like lopping off some material off of the grip end then think again, because it is not that simple.  That driver might be shorter, but that recently modified driver is even lighter in both overall weight and in the heft you have in your hands.  You aren’t going to know where that club is during the swing or where the ball might land without a spotter. The analogy would be like trying to swing a feather.  Of course the other option is pulling out the #3-wood, but what fun is that? Not to mention the smaller size is going to be less of a confidence builder when you need it most.  No wonder this is such a hard game.

Instead of driving begin “thriving”
There is a simple solution to this for the vast majority of golfer that plays this great game. The answer is one of the best high lofted drivers in the golf industry, the Acer XS Thriver driver, now in it’s third generation!  You might be asking, “Thriver…hmm, I am unfamiliar with that term.”  Well if you combine the terms Three Wood + Driver you get Thriver or the best of both worlds when it comes to these two heads. Think about it, the modern deep face driver is approximately 3 times the size of a typical #3 wood creating a much higher moment of inertia making it in theory much more forgiving.  Plus you have the large confidence building, thin face with the high COR right up to the legal limit for more distance.  On the other hand, your #3-wood is more lofted and cuts down on some of the slice or hook spin plus shorter to enable you to have more control.

  • Large, confidence building volume (460cc) and face height
  • Thin, reactive face for high-rebound surface and maximum distance
  • Higher loft (but not too much) to reduce side spin
  • Shorter, more control length for solidness of contact
  • Heavier weight head maximizes MOI and increases momentum into the ball

The Acer XS Thriver weighs a full 10g more than a normal driver to allow for a shorter (1”), more controllable length that now has the proper amount of weight in your hands.  Plus that extra 10 grams of weight produces an even higher MOI for the ultimate in control off the tee to make this one of the best Acer golf drivers we have ever created.  Unlike most 14 degree drivers on the market,  the 2013 Acer Thriver  doesn’t produce as high of a loft as you would imagine so the ball is going outward instead of up and dropping from the sky.

Leave the ball retriever for the next guy
Get even and make the golf ball companies pissed off at you.  An estimated 300 million golf balls are lost annually in the US alone and I want to do something about it! The cost of those normally lost balls with your old driver could go directly in your pocket, for lessons or to play more golf with the Acer XS Thriver.  Guess what, when you start finally hitting more fairways (and your own); your next shot is going to be easier.  The next thing you know, you are looking at your scorecard and you have a new personal best.  If you are not straight now with your current driver, then what makes you think that new driver, that is supposed to give you 5 or 10 yards more, will be any longer?  It is only going to be that much longer out of bounds.

There is hope to longer drives.  What size driver do I need? Again, it goes back to the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.  That hope (Acer XS Thriver) is being sold by Hireko or the thousands of independent clubmakers who use our products. Not even a single one of the major manufacturers have become hip this category of clubhead.  That is probably because many of these produce those lucrative golf balls too for you to loose.  There are millions upon millions of golfers who don’t play professionally or even come close to it.  Leave the big stick to the pros.  This is why I so vehemently feel these are the reason the number selling driver in all of golf shouldn’t be a driver at all, but an Acer XS Thriver driver.

The Power Play Warp Speed Brassie: A Fresh New Spin on a Terrific Old Idea

The Power Play Warp Speed Brassie may just be that missing club you have been looking for all along as a control club off the tee or to reach those long par 4s

Power Play Warp Speed Brassie Fairway WoodThis year, Hireko is introducing a new type club that golfers are probable going to be unfamiliar with. That is until after today! In modern era of golf, we know there is the driver, fairway wood, hybrids, etc.  Plus, in many of the clubhead categories like the best fairway woods, they have numbers engraved on the sole like 3, 5 and 7 (which are the most common).  However, this wasn’t always the case.  History shows us all type of unique names for clubs, such as “spoon”, “mashie”, “baffy” and “cleek” to name just a few. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, we would like to re-introduce to you one of terms in the brand new Power Play Warp Speed “Brassie”.

History of the Brassie
For you old-timers out there, you probably recollect such a club called the Brassie fairway wood.  In fact, you might have even hit a ball with one.  For the rest of us, the Brassie was a wooden golf club with a brass sole plate – hence the name. Brass was more durable than the wood it replaced to protect the head from being hit off the ground.  One byproduct of the dense brass material was that it produced a clubhead with low center of gravity. The term “Brassie” or variants also applied to various lofted wooden clubs in the 1880s and 1890s, such as a Driving Brassie, Brassie Spoon or Brassie Iron.

The loft of a Brassie was typically between 12 and 17 degrees.  In trying to replicate history, the Warp Speed Brassie is equipped with 13º of loft and outfitted with a metallic sole with a brass PVD finish.

Is the Brassie a modern #2 wood?
Close, but no cigar.  In reality, one way to describe the Power Play Warp Speed Brassie is a strong 3 wood as the weight is the same a normal 3 wood (instead of lighter like the #2) as well as lower lofted. Because of the massively large volume (we’ll get to why in a moment), we could not physically make this very special forged stainless steel fairway any lighter.

Who is the Brassie for?
The million dollar question is who is a candidate to put the Warp Speed Brassie in their golf bag?  I guess the first thing you need to understand is the purpose.  In the olden days, the Brassie could also be used off of a tee because they could provide player more accuracy and control without suffering much, if any, distance.  In keeping with that theme, the Power Play Warp Speed Brassie was developed.

Size does matter
There are a number of strong lofted 3 woods on the market, but none quite like this one. Our “Brassie” is just part of the Power Play Warp Speed line.  I’ll get ahead of myself a bit, as we have yet to introduce the other members of the family yet. But if you take a look at the diagram you will understand what we have done.

Power Play Warp Speed Brassie Compared

The Brassie has a very large footprint at address – only 12% smaller than the matching driver.  If it were the height of a typical driver, then the volume would comparable to a 380 cc driver telling you just how forgiving it is.  If you want to compare the Brassie to a typical #3 wood, then it will be approximately 24% more forgiving.  In layman’s terms – you’ll hit the Power Play Warp Speed Brassie straighter.

But remember, the face is still shallow and easy enough to hit off of the deck.  Rest assured “that ain’t gonna happen with a driver”.  We thinned the crown area out as much as possible to maintain a low as well as rearward center of gravity to get the ball up and out with less spin.

Power Play Warp Speed Brassie Face Height

As you can see, the Brassie is a versatile clubs. Undoubtedly, it is our straightest fairway wood we offer, but it is no chump when it comes to distance either.  We hadn’t even mentioned that there is a high-strength, super-thin face to boost the ball velocity coming off of the face for a combination that is awfully hard to beat.

However, if you decide on ordering a Power Play Warp Speed Brassie, there is no need for an additional #3 wood in the bag – skip to the #5.  Lastly, if you were to conduct a search for Brassie on the internet, chances are they will describe it as an obsolete club.  The funny part is if our golfing forefathers had created this beast, then Brassie would be in the lexicon of golf terms today.  Whether you are intimidated by a large driver, need a control club off the tee or a powerful fairway wood to reach long par 4s or those par 5s in two, the Power Play Warp Speed Brassie may just be that missing club you have been looking for all along.

Introducing the New for 2013 Acer XS Titanium Driver – The “Standard”

Acer XS Titanium Driver SoleLightweight Crown For Improved Weight Distribution

What might be the best driver in golf you have yet to hear about? Well today, I would like to introduce to you to the “standard” version of the new Acer XS driver series.  Each year, we strive and learn better and more efficient ways to produce our titanium golf drivers so you end up a product that will provide you or your customer with more performance.  The Acer XS series (short for excess) is no exception as it goes a step beyond our popular Acer XF drivers we have offered for the past two years.

Here’s how we did it.  First, we maintained the 460cc titanium driver volume but made the crown a little taller and the breadth a little wider to give it more of a full-bodied look.  What makes up difference in size comes in is the shorter heel-to-toe dimension allowing the head to rotate more rapidly around the hosel or shaft so it will be easier to square up at impact.

Acer XS Titanium Driver Proportions
You might think that a taller crown would normally raise the center of gravity of the golf clubhead, and you would be right. But we took a page from the Acer XF Leggera and shed all the weight possible from the crown to actually Acer XS Titanium Driver Crownlower the center of gravity.  This is the secret to help optimize launch and spin for even greater distance.  We even altered the face construction to attain a high ball velocity over a wider area of the face too.

The standard version of the Acer XS driver series is geared to fit as wide array of players as well as complementing the various Acer XS irons.  For example, the lowest lofted (9.5º) version is made with a 1º open face to guard against hooking the ball – that same player would most likely select the Acer XS Forged Iron or Acer XS Pro Iron.  The meat and potatoes of the group are the 10.5º and 12º lofts; each having a unique set of specifications to match the standard Acer XS Iron or Acer XS HT Irons (high trajectory) respectively. This is just part of the comprehensive Acer XS line that we will address in the coming weeks ahead.

View Technical Director’s Jeff Summitts Videoblog on the Acer XS Titanium Driver

What really make these shine are the sensory elements – or those you can see and hear.  The color really stands out. The copper-on-black color scheme was patterned off of the dog that my wife and I rescued and Jeff_dogavoided having to be put to sleep.  Its traditional shape will appeal to the most discerning eye, but maybe more importantly will be the muted sound.  All in all, the standard version of the Acer XS Titanium Driver is a well-rounded and affordable driver series that can be custom made and perform just as well as the more expensive brand name drivers.  Experience an Acer XS driver for yourself and I am sure you’ll have something to “woof” about too.

Simply the best way to select the right golf shaft for your golf game!

Dynamic Shaft Fitting IndexOne of the comments we received from customers on our new golf clubmaking catalog was “Where was the golf shaft fitting chart located in the back of the golf clubmaking catalog you had the past 3 years? I used that a lot for reference.”  To be totally honest, we didn’t have the room this year to insert the 3 extra pages needed in the catalog.  However, we realize that a lot of our customers used this as a handy reference guide so we have now updated it and made it downloadable on our site.  Not only that, but we made it more interactive at the same time.

What is different?
Not only is the Hireko Quick Shaft Fitting Guide updated to reflect the new golf shafts in the catalog, but we have added hyperlinks to each of the products.  With one click, you can now go directly to it’s Hireko golf shafts page, read the description, look up the pricing and detailed specifications to compare products and even order. This will help you choose the best shaft for your game.

What does Hireko Quick Shaft Fitting Guide do?
For those not familiar with the Hireko Quick Shaft Fitting Guide, it is a guide to help filter the wood and irons shafts we offer by clubhead speed (or player’s distance), shaft weight and ball flight.  The categorization is based on our ongoing golf shaft testing project called the Dynamic Shaft Fitting Index or DSFI for short.

The key is to find the group or category of graphite or steel shafts based on your or your customer’s golf swing speed, distance and tempo.  From there, we break it down in different weight ranges starting from lightest golf shaft to heaviest within the grouping.  For example, if you or your custom is looking for more distance, you would choose a golf shaft that is lighter.  For more control, you would select a heavier golf shaft.  Once the weight range has been selected, then you can sub-filter those golf shafts based on trajectory or fade/draw.  In a nutshell, the Hireko Quick Shaft Fitting  Guide saves times from sorting through 50 pages of shaft in the catalog or thumbing through countless web pages to find a suitable shaft.

The Hireko Shaft Fitting Guide is just another example of how we are committed to educating our customer base and making ordering or selecting golf shafts more efficient.
